Book Review: Origin By Jessica Khoury

Origin

Origin is about a young girl who is immortal, born and raised in the Amazon Jungle. She has no idea what’s out there because the group of scientists that raised her have kept all of that a secret, sheltering her because they believe that if she knew what was out there she would want to escape the so-called safe haven they have built for her.

Sitting in her glass room, Pia notices a brake in the fence where a tree had fallen. Her curiosity getting the best of her, she sneaks out into the forest with her pet Jaguar to explore. And that’s exactly what she does. She literally runs into the handsome jungle boy, Eio. Automatically she feels as if she knows him, later you find out why. After Eio and her have a chat, she goes back to her home, with nothing but Eio on her mind.

I loved Origin though I almost didn’t finish it because of the extremely slow beginning, but once you get passed that it’s all good.

There were a few parts that confused me though; when Pia finally meets Eio, he calls her “Pia bird”. She never actually told Eio her name. So unless Eio spied on her all the time, (which is unlikely due to how heavily guarded the facility was) he shouldn’t have known her name.

At times it seems as if she is thinking way too much about everything, which is a little annoying. But I wouldn’t hold her too accountable; Pia has been raised with the idea that she would become a scientist too one day and join the Immortis Team to create more immortals.

There is no romance in it except for some mild flirting between Eio and Pia. They kiss once, but it’s not described in detail.
Violence wise, people do get shot (via; gun and/or bow), and eaten by man eating ants (don’t ask). Pia and another character go into one of the abandoned wings in the science lab, and find dried blood and a ton of skeletons.
Scientific facts are scattered throughout the book, which in my opinion, I thought was really cool.
I wouldn’t give this book five stars, because it does have its flaws, but it wasn’t bad. I would say four stars would be a good rating.
